Angela Muzumbwe Jere, a graduate of the University of Zambia, in the school of education, has ‘abandoned’ her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education (BEdSp), to clean stained toilets.

Operating under a duly registered company, Lometa Innovative Ventures Ltd, Angela says she embarked on toilet cleaning last year, after noticing many places she visited struggled to deal with hard to remove toilet stains.

When dozens of university graduates are queuing up for white collar jobs, Angela Muzumbwe has vowed to grow her business which extends to food processing.

“I joined the supply business in 2021 through my elder sister’s company and later started doing it by myself. I’ve been doing food processing from early 2022 and later that same year, I started deep cleaning of toilets,” shared Angela, a 33 year old mother of three girls. “Away from general supply and toilet cleaning, I am a trainer in food processing, my main area of concern is dairy and tomato processing.”

Asked on why a professionally trained special needs teacher decided to venture in toilet cleaning among other businesses, Ms. Angela Muzumbwe said, “Of course, my passion for children with special needs cannot be questioned. I still remain passionate about it, and I pray one day I be able to grow my business to the this area. I once in a while do advocacy for children with special needs. Toilet cleaning is business, just like any other business. Who’s going to do it, if I don’t do it? A degree must not be the end of every person’s dream life.

“A degree will offer you great leverage, and in acquiring it, you gain so much knowledge, and I did. I value it. But, at the moment, I’m doing my best in a field many would frown upon. To encourage someone out there, I am scheduled to further my education; I want to pursue a Master’s Degree in Clinical Neuropsychology. I’ve learned that, in life, it is easy to do anything you put your mind to, especially if you care to get an education. Education exposes one to critical thinking. So, I’ve not tossed my Degree away. Only that I’m currently using part of knowledge acquired, to earn a living.”

Ms. Muzumbwe continued: “I have visited homes and business places that do not know what to do with those hard to remove stains in the toilets. At times, these stains come as a result of high chemical content in water and I thought I could make use of my trade secret that, a secret I learnt from my mother right in the comfort of our home. So, I do deep cleaning of toilets, and ensure that I remove those tough to remove stains, then disinfect the places.”

Angela Muzumbwe shared that she is happily married, and that her husband, Mr. Jere, and friends, support her business.

“My friends, even those I went to University with, understand my hustle, and support it. I’ve not come across anyone that look down on my hustle,” Angela Muzumbwe-Jere said.
