Zambian boxers started their fight on a good note as all three pugilists won their bouts against Zimbabwean boxers.

First to step in the ring was Tom Kabunda who made his debut at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games in Lilongwe Malawi and mercilessly stopped his opponent Joel Mangombe in the second round of the 52kg flyweight bout via Rsc.

Mwengo Mwale who won silver in Lesotho Maseru didn’t want to disappoint his ancestors back home as he flogged Taliana Kelvin in the 57kg featherweight via Rsc in round one.

Melody Ng’ona who has gold from Lesotho Maseru stumbled in the second round but managed to compose herself and wrapped up Team Zambia’s day with a win in the 52kg flyweight by beating Todiwa Dzinavene on a unanimous points decision 5-0.

After the bouts, Team Zambia boxing coach Maybin Gunduza said his boxers are not in Malawi for leisure or adventure but to win medals.

He says despite the boxers not fighting in their normal weights they did put up the spirit fights to reach the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals to be played on the 7 December at 16:00hrs Tom Kabunda will square it out with Moriti Jeremane of Lesotho while Mwengo Mwale will face Vache Macie Elton of Mozambique. The last bout for Team Zambia for Wednesday’s session will see Joseph Kabwe in the light middleweight 71kg face Wilson Phiri of Malawi.
