THE Livingstone local court has ordered a woman to pay K5,000 as compensation for insulting her neighbour and church-mate, and further castigated her for interfering in other people’s marriages.
The court made the ruling in a case in which Wachama, 34, was sued by Chanda, aged 32, for insulting her and interfering in her marriage.
Chanda was demanding K5,000 as compensation.
She told the court that she was neighbours as well as church-mates with Wachama.
She said one day when she returned home from running an errand in town, her husband raised concern that her friend, Wachama, was bad-mouthing her.
“I was shocked that Wachama insulted me and my mother. Wachama bragged that she was a powerful woman who does not tolerate nonsense,” she said.
Chanda said the matter was reported to the church leadership and that Wachama’s husband had to intervene.
“The matter was then taken to the police, where it could not be resolved. The matter was then brought to court,” she said.
But Wachama told the court that it was Chanda’s husband who approached her, complaining about his wife’s behaviour towards him because he is unemployed.
Wachama said she tried to resolve the issue, but there was no cooperation from Chanda.
Wachama, who admitted that her actions of going to Chanda’s husband and mother-in-law were wrong, said she could not tolerate Chanda’s behaviour.
In passing judgment, local court magistrate Charles Mumba upheld the claim of insulting and ordered Wachama to pay K5,000 in K500 monthly instalments.
The court also ordered Wachama to stop interfering in other people’s marriages.
