A man of Lusangazi district in Eastern Province has been arrested and charged for the offence of murder involving a 3 year old child in an attempt to become wealthy.

Rabson Sakala aged 49 of Village 87 in Sandwe Chiefdom, was implicated after the victim was reported missing by the mother on 25th May, 2023.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, explains that the child’s mother, Nyawa Phiri, a Teacher at Kasangazi Primary School, reported that her son, Bornface Lungu, went missing on 21st May, 2023 around 14:00.

Hamoonga says the boy went to Village 87 from Kasangazi to spend a weekend with other family members, adding that on the fateful day, he decided to join friends who were herding cattle.

He states that whilst in the bush, the victim left his friends and went back to the village but on his way, it was alleged that he got lost.

Hamoonga says Police opened an Inquiry file and intensified investigations, which resulted in the arrest of Sakala on 1st August, 2023.

He notes that during interrogations, the suspect reviewed that while accompanied by his friend Benson Sakala, he went to consult a named Witch Doctor who told him to kill a child and present private parts to him in order for them to become rich.

The suspect further confessed that on the material day, the duo killed the child using a knife and took the said private parts to the Witch Doctor who rejected the organs saying they were supposed to kill either of their children for the medicine to work.

Hamoonga says Police are yet apprehend the other suspect and the Witch Doctor who are on the run.
