Out of suspected rage, a 25-year-old woman from Lusaka’s Mtendere has been arrested and taken to court for allegedly assaulting her two children—one aged nine and the other 11 months old.

The accused, Dorcas Bwalya, has been charged with two counts of assault on a child and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

It is alleged that on August 9 of this year, the accused assaulted an 11-month-old boy.
In the second count, it is alleged that on the same date, Ms. Bwalya assaulted a nine-month-old girl, causing her actual bodily harm.

The accused is yet to enter a plea before the Lusaka Magistrates Court.

Police investigations indicate that on that day, a woman from Mtendere Township reported that her grandson had been assaulted.

The informant told the police that the child was allegedly slapped and injured using unknown objects by its mother, Ms. Bwalya, after which he sustained bruises on the head and general body pain.

The suspect was later arrested.

The second assault on a child occurred when the accused was at a bar while feeding her nine-month-old baby potatoes mixed with spaghetti.

When she finished feeding the child, it started crying. In a fit of rage, the accused slapped the infant and threw it on the ground.

She later carried the baby and made it sit on a chair, after which she gave her some corn puffs to eat before leaving for an unknown destination. The child was left unattended.

Around 14:00 hours, the baby started crying, prompting a well-wisher at the bar to carry it and start looking for its mother.

After a fruitless search for the child’s mother, the matter was reported to the police.
