Zambian Mixed Martial Arts star Miracle Chipito has brought pride to the country after winning the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year Award at the 2026 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Annual Sports Awards held in Luanda, Angola.
Chipito emerged victorious ahead of strong competition from Namibia’s Vera Looser and Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga, cementing her growing reputation as one of Zambia’s top sporting talents.
The talented fighter received two nominations at the regional awards ceremony, including a nomination for the highly competitive Sportsperson of the Year Award.
Zambia also secured recognition at the regional event through the Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Football Team, which completed the country’s list of three nominations.
Reacting to the achievement, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe congratulated Miracle Chipito for her outstanding success, describing the award as a reflection of her hard work, discipline, and determination.
Mr. Chileshe said Chipito’s rise in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts continues to inspire many young athletes across Zambia and proves that dedication and commitment can lead to international excellence.
He also praised Chipito’s coaches for their continued support and mentorship, while commending the Mixed Martial Arts Federation of Zambia for its efforts in promoting and developing the sport in the country.
The Permanent Secretary further congratulated the Zambia Under-17 Women’s National Team for their nomination at the AUSC Region 5 Awards and encouraged the players to remain focused and continue aiming for greater achievements.
In addition, Mr. Chileshe commended the junior women’s football team following their impressive 5-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first leg of the second round of the 2026 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers played in Ndola.
The Ministry stated that Zambia remains committed to supporting sports development and empowering athletes to compete successfully on regional and international stages.
