LUSAKA, Zambia – The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has encouraged citizens to invest in solar energy solutions and adopt net metering systems as part of efforts to prepare for the anticipated effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
Speaking to Hot FM News, Vickson Nc’ube emphasized the importance of proactive planning to help the country manage potential weather-related challenges, including both floods and droughts.
Mr. Nc’ube said Zambia must be adequately prepared for various outcomes associated with El Niño, noting that climate-related events can have a significant impact on power generation and energy security.
According to the ZESCO Board Chairperson, increased adoption of alternative energy sources such as solar power will strengthen the country’s resilience and help ensure a stable electricity supply under changing weather conditions.
He explained that investing in renewable energy solutions can reduce pressure on the national grid while providing households and businesses with additional energy options during periods of high demand or environmental challenges.
Mr. Nc’ube also highlighted the benefits of net metering systems, which allow consumers who generate their own solar power to feed excess electricity back into the national grid, helping improve overall energy efficiency.
The call comes as Zambia continues to promote renewable energy as part of broader efforts to diversify the country’s energy mix and reduce reliance on hydroelectric power, which can be affected by prolonged dry spells.
Despite concerns about future weather conditions, Mr. Nc’ube assured the nation that ZESCO is working to maintain a reliable electricity supply and that there will be no power supply challenges following the upcoming elections.
His remarks are expected to provide reassurance to households, businesses, and investors who rely on stable electricity services for their daily operations.
Energy experts have increasingly emphasized the importance of renewable energy investments as climate change continues to influence weather patterns across Southern Africa.
With El Niño expected to affect several countries in the region, ZESCO’s message underscores the growing need for sustainable energy solutions and preparedness measures to safeguard Zambia’s energy future.
