….says the Socialist Party is seeking a radical change in the manner the country is governed
Socialist Party President Dr Fred M’membe has charged that the Zambian people are not interested in seeing opposition leaders being pursued on flimsy grounds but rather having food on the table.
Speaking on the Hot Seat Programme today, Dr M’membe said the most important thing is to improve the living conditions of the people of Zambia and not making dubious arrests.
He said when Governments have difficulties governing and delivering, explaining themselves, History has shown us that increasingly turn to oppression.
Dr M’membe who has in the last 30 days been detained twice wondered if his arrests have reduced the Price of Mealie Meal which has continued to escalate.
“The mocking of politicians does not matter. They can only matter if they change the living conditions of our people. Me being arrested does not change anything. I have been arrested, has the living conditions of the people changed, has the price of mealie meal gone down, have the prices of fuel and fertilizer gone down.
“The issues I have been arrested over are in public domain, they are very well known. People can judge for themselves. The recent arrest over shooting someone, it is the most ridiculous over a regime can try to do. Was Kenneth Kaunda a Criminal, even Rupiah Banda went to Prison was he a Criminal, even HH went to prison under ECL, was he a criminal. We know the police are under pressure. They do not care wherever I am acquitted or not. What they care about is the inconveniencing caused,” he said.
He said it is not about what the leaders say they have achieved but how the people feel.
“People are looking for a better life. They want to live better with their generation. They want to go to bed at night not worrying what they are going to eat tomorrow. And they go to bed without having eaten. We are losing a lot of people due to stress. It is not easy,” he said.
And Dr M’membe said the socialist Party is seeking a radical change in the manner the country is governed.
He said there is need to increase people’s participation in Governance issues.
He said Zambia is being Governed by politicians some of whom are crooked and amassed wealth in a shortest period of time.
“Leaders lead, people Govern. We do not seem to learn. Who can get us out of this. We need to broaden people’s perception. Infumu shitunguluka fye, abateka bantu. The more you involve people in the Governance in their communities, the better the Governance you will see. The lesser the transgressions. Only the people can change this by working together. What is the role of our religious leaders in the Governance of our country. Religious leaders are the best leaders from families. Then the politicians are the worst,” he said.
Dr M’membe has also stated that the local Government under the SP will be for the local people, Traditional Leaders, religious leaders and Civic leaders.
“Even these things as CDF who is running it. What is the role of religious leaders and traditional leaders. We will do away with CDF. There will be a budget for the council. Presidents campaign for councillors, they are chosen by the party. In our councils do you find civic leaders.
