NO ‘BONANZA’ IN MARKETS

Lusaka City Council has directed businesses dealing in gambling machines, commonly known as bonanzas, to remove them from markets to inhibit accessibility to children.

Council public relations manager Chola Mwamba says shop owners should find alternative places to turn into gambling establishments which will not be accessible to young people.

She said in a statement that the local authority is concerned with the high number of underage children taking part in gambling activities.

Ms Mwamba said most young people are absconding school in preference for the vice. She said the trend, which is worrying, calls for an urgent need for effective education and prevention programmes.

“It is also the responsibility of facility owners to uphold the law and protect the youth from participating in gambling and other activities that are not suitable for them,” Ms Mwamba said.

She said the local authority will be conducting regular inspections around the city, starting with Chipata Township, to ensure compliance to regulations.

Ms Mwamba implored stakeholders to work together in safeguarding the welfare of children in communities and promote a safe and healthy environment for all residents of Lusaka.
