THREE youthful students of Mulungushi University have died in a horrific road accident near their institution in Kabwe.

The accident has also left three other students seriously injured.

According to reports, the fatal accident occurred in the early hours of today, between 03:30 and 04:00 hours, at a bridge near Mulungushi University along the Great North Road.

Zambia Police public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi, has told Kalemba that the accident involved a Mercedes Benz C200 motor vehicle, registration number BBC 6881, which was being driven by student Mukuka Chanda, who died on the scene.

Chilabi said the vehicle had six occupants, all identified as students at Mulungushi University.

He explained that preliminary investigations indicate that the accident was caused by excessive speed, which led to the driver losing control of the vehicle.

“The driver is believed to have lost control due to excessive speed, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn several times,” said Chilabi.

He identified the deceased as Mukuka Chanda, who was the driver, Felix Luther, whose age has not yet been established and Mwangula Kabwe (24).

“All three victims sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene,” he said.

Chilabi further stated that the three survivors, namely Willard Phiri 24, Ashford Soko, 24 and Chongo Mutembula, 24, sustained serious injuries in the crash.

“They were rushed to Kabwe Central Hospital where they are currently receiving medical attention,” he added.

He said the bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in Kabwe Central Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations.
