Journalists in Choma marked World Press Freedom Day with a social get-together at Choma Hotel on Sunday evening, bringing together scribes from across the district to network and reflect on their role in society.

The event drew reporters from Choma Maanu, Byta FM, YG FM, and Crown TV, among others as part of the 2026 international commemorations.

The gathering was “spiced up” by the surprise arrival of Choma South parliamentary hopeful Joe Muchindu, who stopped by to greet the journalists.

Muchindu commended the local media for driving community development and underscored the importance of journalists in shaping an informed society.

“The local media’s role in Choma’s development is critical. You tell our stories, hold leaders accountable, and keep the community informed,” Muchindu told the scribes.

Meanwhile, Journalists described his unexpected stop as a morale booster, saying it showed recognition of their work under often difficult conditions.

World Press Freedom Day is commemorated globally on 3 May to defend media independence and honour journalists.

Journalists across the country celebrated the day in different ways.
