Crown Television Zambia has become the first media institution in Africa to receive a Golden Tier badge from African Women in Media (AWiM) for leading the gender agenda in media.

The award was presented during a policy validation session themed _“The Policy Gap: Identifying Barriers to Ratification.”_

AWiM CEO and Founder Dr. Yemisi Akinbobola said Crown Television had “walked the talk” on gender responsiveness.

“The station’s move to attain gender balance in its management structure is a unique score,” said Prof. Akinbobola. “They have demonstrated practical commitment, not just rhetoric.”

Receiving the badge, Crown Television Zambia CEO Mwape Kumwenda said the recognition confirms the station’s leadership in gender-responsive media on the continent.

“This is a huge sign that Crown Television is taking a lead in gender-responsive media in Africa,” Kumwenda said. “The badge signals a public endorsement of our role in shaping fair and inclusive narratives,” she said in a post of Crown TV page.

The award winning journalist added that the Golden Tier status reflects Crown TV’s “strong, consistent, and measurable commitment to gender equality in media.”

AWiM’s tier badge system ranks media houses on gender policy, representation, and content as part of efforts to close the gender gap in African newsrooms.
