The Zambia Police Service has confirmed that former intelligence chief Xavier Chungu has been questioned and issued with a Warn and Caution Statement in connection with alleged offences under the State Security Act.

According to a press statement released by the Zambia Police Service on May 29, 2026, Mr. Chungu is being investigated for the alleged communication of certain information contrary to Section 4(1) of the State Security Act, Chapter 111 of the Laws of Zambia.

Police Reveal Details of Investigation

Police say the alleged incident occurred on May 24, 2026, between 16:00 hours and 18:00 hours in New Kasama, Lusaka.

Authorities allege that Mr. Chungu disclosed confidential information entrusted to him by virtue of his former position in government service.

The Zambia Police Service stated that the information in question was allegedly made public despite being classified and accessed during his tenure while holding public office under the Government of the Republic of Zambia.

Xavier Chungu Remains in Police Custody

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that Mr. Chungu remains in police custody as investigations continue.

The Zambia Police Service further stated that more updates would be provided to the public as the matter progresses.
