Chipata Level One Hospital in Lusaka has revealed that it has recorded 132 vasectomy cases since the procedure was introduced in the public health sector last year.

A vasectomy is a permanent form of male birth control that involves cutting or blocking the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to semen.

Hospital Licentiate Muria Simuyaba Songiso says the procedure, which takes about 30 minutes, is safe and does not affect a man’s sexual desire or performance.

Ms. Songiso explains that vasectomy is a permanent procedure and should only be considered by men who are certain they do not wish to have more children.

She has however, emphasized that vasectomy does not protect individuals from HIV or other sexually transmitted infections.

Ms. Songiso has further disclosed that the hospital has launched a campaign running until the end of June to encourage eligible men to undergo the free procedure.

She has also encouraged women to support their partners in considering the procedure as part of family planning efforts.
