The UTH Boss

There was an abrasive medical doctor who was appointed boss of the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). At that time, UTH was very dirty and not too pleasant facility for patients.

So, this crazy doctor, used unorthodox leadership skills and method to turn UTH around. His friends and enemies appreciated his work in equal measure. UTH was cleaned up! His work did not go unnoticed by the top office.

“I want to make him Permanent Secretary so that he can expand his leadership to all hospitals in the country,” the President said.

Others opposed mainly on the fact that he was a reputed member of the opposition Patriotic Front (as it then was) and therefore cannot fit in the MMD agenda.

President Rupiah Banda stood his ground. PF or not, he is the right man for the job. However, the doctor himself refused the appointment. He wanted to remain at UTH here he was “comfortable and happy” as he put it. After back and forth, he accepted the promotion in 2010.

Within short time, he even become part of the Presidential medical team. He was a jovial and noisy man during that time – I do not know now! Most people believed he was arrogant and undiplomatic in his demeanor.

On foreign trips, he would travel with only passport, notepad and pen. The rest will sort itself out at the final destination!

“If it was not for school, this young man would have been something else on the streets,” former Vice president Enoch Kavindele once said about this doctor.
