The reintroduced speed cameras are recording up to 1,000 contravening cases daily by motorists, a development Government has described as alarming.

Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali says when the cameras were operationalised early this month, motorists showed some level of compliance to traffic rules but later slackened.

Mr Tayali is concerned about the rate at which motorists are not adhering to traffic rules, a development which is compromising Zambia’s road safety profile.

He said this on Saturday in the tourist capital, Livingstone, where Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) conducted some patrols.

“The numbers are staggering, we are now recording an average of between 500 to 1,100 contravening cases on a daily basis.

“This is alarming and this is what has really caused Zambia’s road safety profile [to be] low. Speed does kill,” the minister said.

Mr Tayali urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules and pay the fine once captured by cameras to avoid being blocked.

RTSA recently mounted speed cameras in selected main highways to curb road carnages.

In March this year, the agency announced that it had commenced the process of integrating its systems with the Intelligent Traffic Management System under the Safe City project as part of the Smart Traffic law enforcement initiative.
