For many WhatsApp users, one question regularly causes concern: Can someone read your WhatsApp messages without having your phone in their hands?
The short answer is that WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption is designed to prevent outsiders from simply intercepting and reading your personal messages. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, meaning that only the people involved in the conversation can access their content.
However, that does not mean your WhatsApp account is impossible to access without your phone.
One of the biggest risks is an unauthorised linked device.
WhatsApp allows users to connect their accounts to computers, tablets and additional phones. Once a device has been legitimately linked, it can access WhatsApp even when the primary phone is not currently online. WhatsApp says users can link up to four additional devices to their primary phone.
This means someone who previously gained access to your phone and successfully linked their computer or another device could potentially continue accessing your WhatsApp chats without physically having your phone every time.

WhatsApp recommends regularly reviewing the devices connected to your account and logging out any device you do not recognise.
Another possible risk involves someone attempting to take control of your WhatsApp account.
WhatsApp registration requires a verification code sent to the phone number associated with the account. The company warns users never to share their six-digit registration code or password with anyone.
If someone obtains that verification code, they may be able to register your WhatsApp number on another device.
WhatsApp says that if your number is successfully registered on a new phone, the person using your account elsewhere is logged out when you successfully register the number again.
There is also another layer of protection that users should consider: two-step verification.
WhatsApp’s two-step verification adds an additional authentication requirement to help protect an account from unauthorised registration.
Users should also be cautious about suspicious links, unofficial WhatsApp applications and websites claiming they can secretly reveal another person’s WhatsApp messages.
WhatsApp specifically warns that unofficial apps and websites can put accounts at risk and may compromise account security.
So, can someone simply sit somewhere else and remotely read your WhatsApp messages without access to your account, device or linked device?
Not simply because they know your phone number.
WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption is specifically designed to prevent outsiders, including WhatsApp itself, from reading the contents of personal encrypted messages.
But if someone has successfully linked a device to your account, obtained your verification information, compromised your account, or has another form of access to your device or data, the situation can be very different.
There is another important point that people sometimes forget: the person you are chatting with already has access to the messages you sent them.
WhatsApp itself notes that when you share a message, photograph, video, file or voice message with another person, that person has a copy and can potentially forward or share it with others.
In other words, encryption protects the communication while it travels between devices, but it cannot prevent a recipient from deliberately sharing something they have received.
If you are worried that someone may have access to your account, start by opening WhatsApp’s Linked Devices section and checking every connected device. Log out of anything you do not recognise. WhatsApp also recommends enabling two-step verification and keeping your application updated.
And perhaps the most important rule is simple: never give your WhatsApp verification code, password or security information to another person.
Your WhatsApp number may be public, but your verification credentials should remain private.
