A police officer from Chirundu Police Station has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour after being convicted of corruption involving a K800 bribe.
Francis Chisala was convicted of one count of Corrupt Practices by a Public Officer, contrary to Section 19(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act, Chapter 91 of the Laws of Zambia.
The conviction was handed down at the Siavonga Subordinate Court, where Lusaka High Court Judge Ireen Wishimanga was presiding. The 12-month sentence is effective from September 25, 2026.
According to details of the case, Chisala committed the offence between November 30 and December 3, 2020, in Chirundu District, while serving as a police officer at Chirundu Police Station.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) stated that Chisala corruptly obtained K800 as gratification from Jeremiah Donkan Phiri as an inducement not to charge him with a traffic offence and to allow him to use the Chirundu-Lusaka Road.

The matter was connected to a transaction concerning the Zambia Police Service, a public body.
Chisala was arrested and charged by the ACC in July 2024, before eventually being convicted and sentenced by the court.
The case has now resulted in a custodial sentence, with the ACC warning public officers against soliciting or accepting bribes or any form of gratification while carrying out their official duties.
The Commission said public office is a position of trust and must be exercised with integrity and in the interest of the public.
The ACC further warned that the conviction and sentence should serve as a reminder that corruption carries serious consequences, adding that it will continue investigating corruption cases and, where evidence establishes an offence, ensure that those responsible face the law.
The case also highlights the potential legal consequences for public officers who use their positions to seek personal financial benefits from members of the public.
