Four die in road accident while 11 others are nursing serious injuries

Fatal Road Traffic Accident in Kapiri Mposhi
April 18, 2024- The Zambia Police Service regrets to inform the public of a fatal road traffic accident involving four deaths that occurred today, April 18, 2024, at 08:30 hours along the Ndola highway at Katanino Trading Area, approximately 45 kilometers north of Kapiri Mposhi district.

The accident involved two vehicles:
• A Volvo tanker truck bearing registration number BCB 5452ZM/ BCB3660ZM, driven by Mr. Kennedy Chiluba, aged 36, of House 124 Twapya Compound in Ndola, traveling from Ndola to Nakonde.

• A Hino Ranger light truck with registration number BBA 8110, driven by Mr. Fex Muleya, aged 32, of Mooyo Village in Pemba District, traveling from south to north (Monze to Kasumbalesa) direction. The Hino Ranger was carrying 18 passengers and was loaded with goats and pigs.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver of the Hino Ranger attempted to overtake improperly and collided with the oncoming tanker truck.

Tragically, as a result of the impact:

• Two male passengers lost their lives on the scene due to fatal injuries.

• Two additional male passengers succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

• The deceased bodies have been transferred to the Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital mortuary for identification, postmortem examination, and burial arrangements.

• Eleven other passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital.

Fortunately, the driver of the tanker truck and three other passengers from the Hino Ranger light truck escaped unhurt.

The Hino Ranger light truck’s trailer was extensively damage, while the front part of the tanker truck was also damaged in the collision.

At present, the driver of the Hino Ranger light truck is at large, and efforts are underway to locate and bring him to justice.

The Zambia Police service extends its condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured in the accident.

We urge all road users to exercise caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and prioritize safety at all times to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
