The Free Press Initiative (FPI) on Friday hosted the European Union Election Observation Mission – EU EOM Media Team as part of ongoing engagements with key media stakeholders ahead of Zambia’s 13 August 2026 General Elections.
FPI said the discussion focused on the state of Zambia’s media landscape, the indispensable role of independent journalism, and the need for accurate, ethical, and balanced reporting throughout the electoral process.
The institution further stated that the engagement also provided an opportunity to highlight some of the challenges facing journalists. Key among them are growing concerns around cyber laws and their impact on media freedom, digital rights, and the ability of journalists to report without fear.
“As Zambia approaches the polls, safeguarding freedom of expression and ensuring an enabling environment for the media remain essential to a transparent and credible electoral process,” FPI stated.
FPI further said it remains committed to defending press freedom, promoting media professionalism, and supporting journalism that informs, empowers, and holds power to account.
FPI was founded by Joan Chirwa and continues to work with media, government and civil society to strengthen democracy through free and independent journalism.
The EU EOM is in Zambia to observe and assess the electoral process ahead of the August 13 General Elections.
