OVER 2.3 million children are back in school following the implementation of the free education policy.

Speaking during this year’s World Teachers Day commemoration, Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima said the policy has helped many children access education without discrimination.

Syakalima added that his Ministry has also prioritized the welfare of teachers so that their living standards are improved.

He also emphasized that teachers in the country should continue to advance themselves professionally.

And Teaching Service Commission Chairperson, Daphne Chimuka said the pupil- teacher ratio has been affected following the implementation of the free education policy.

Chimuka said it is imperative for Government to continue recruiting teachers as a way of improving the teacher – pupil ratio.

Meanwhile, UNESCO Representative, Remmy Mukonka said the teacher shortage is high on the global front and needs to be addressed.
