Zambia yesterday, successfully commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child, with government pledging to strongly enforce all available laws to protect girls from all forms of abuse.

Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Ms.Doreen Mwamba has acknowledged that children, especially girls face numerous forms of abuses such as defilement,early marriages, alcohol and substance abuse, child exploitation,sexual abuse, and abductions, among many others.

The Minister was speaking yesterday in Mongu, Western Province when she graced this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, under the theme, “Invest in Girls’ Rights:Our Leadership,Our Wellbeing”.

She said government is therefore going to enforce all the available laws to ensure that girls are protected, for them to survive,thrive and develop and reach their full potential.

Ms.Mwamba assured that with the enactment of the Children’s Code Act No. 12 of 2022, there is adequate legal framework to take punitive measures against all perpetrators of all forms of abuses against girls.

“Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women”, she said.

She said if effectively supported during their adolescent years, girls have potential to change the world both as empowered girls of today, and as tommorow’s workers, mothers, entrepreneurs,mentors, household heads and political leaders.


And in her Communique on behalf on other girls across the country,Josephine Kachama, encouraged government to enact all laws meant to protect girls from abuse and enforce other frameworks to enhance the enjoyment of right of girls and protection from all forms of abuse.

She further acknowledged the strides government has made such as the enactment of the Children’s Code Act, and the launch of the National Child Safeguarding and Participation Frameworks.
