A senior Immigration officer has been detained as authorities investigate an alleged attempt to facilitate the irregular exit of an individual through the Victoria Falls Border Control in Livingstone.

The Department of Immigration confirmed that the incident involved Senior Immigration Officer Masheke Masheke and Jonas Zimba during the early hours of Monday, August 17, 2026.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Immigration, preliminary investigations suggest that Mr. Masheke, who is stationed at Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport, allegedly attempted to assist Mr. Zimba in leaving Zambia through unauthorized means.

The Department said the suspected irregular exit attempt was detected by vigilant officers from the Department of Immigration and the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) who were on duty at the border.

Authorities revealed that when officers approached the two men, Mr. Zimba reportedly fled from the border area in the direction of Livingstone.

Following the incident, Mr. Masheke was taken into custody and is currently being held at Livingstone Central Police Station, where he is assisting investigators.

The Department of Immigration emphasized that the matter is being treated seriously and that investigations are continuing.

Officials have not yet disclosed the circumstances that led to the alleged attempt or the reasons behind Mr. Zimba’s reported departure from the border post.

The Department has also indicated that appropriate action will be taken once investigations are completed.

The case has attracted public attention because it involves a serving Immigration officer, a position that carries the responsibility of enforcing the country’s immigration laws and safeguarding Zambia’s borders.

Authorities have not yet announced whether additional arrests are expected as investigations continue.

The Department of Immigration has reiterated its commitment to maintaining professionalism, accountability and integrity within its operations.
