RESIDENTS of Lolani Village in Chief Kafwimbi’s area of Isoka District have been left traumatised after a three-month-old baby boy was found lifeless, with flesh missing from his nose and a wound on his scrotum, in an incident Police suspects involved a rat.
The infant’s 17-year-old mother, Ivwananji Mbao, told Police in Isoka that she had returned from washing clothes for community members at around 12:00 hours yesterday, October 20, when she placed her son under a mosquito net to rest.
Mbao narrated that due to the prevailing hot weather, she had left the baby without clothes, believing that the mosquito net would protect him from insects and other creatures that could harm him.
After placing the infant under the net, the teenage mother went outside and sat with her own mother, the baby’s grandmother.
A short while later, she returned to the house to check on her son, only to be met with a horrifying sight.
Mbao discovered that flesh had been eaten from the baby’s nose. Upon checking his scrotal area, she also noticed a very visible wound.
Desperate to revive her son, the teenager shook him in an attempt to wake him up, but the baby was unresponsive.

Alarmed, she cried for help, prompting her mother and neighbours to rush into the house, where they witnessed the distressing scene.
Muchinga Province Police Commanding Officer Lubinda Mayamba tells TV Yatu’s #Noel Iyombwa that the incident is believed to have occurred at around 13:00 hours yesterday.
Mayamba says the community rushed the infant to Isoka District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Following the incident, Mbao, accompanied by members of her community, reported the matter to Isoka Police Station at around 18:00 hours.
Mayamba says Police officers immediately visited the scene and later on inspected the baby’s body after receiving the report.
He says preliminary Police investigations indicate that the injuries to the infant’s nose and scrotum may have been caused by rat bites.
The baby’s body has since been deposited at Isoka District Hospital, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination to establish the actual cause of death.
