A 44-YEAR-OLD man of Mambwe, Eastern Province, has died after allegedly taking excessive Kachasu, a traditional brew which, despite being illegal, continues to thrive sometimes openly so.

John Phiri was found dead on the ground near the bar where he was drinking the local brew.

Eastern Province police commanding officer Limpo Liywalii said in a statement the matter was reported by Jelita Tembo, 47, of Pendwe village under Chieftainess Msoro, saying that her farm worker, who hails from Katete, had died after allegedly taking excessive Kachasu.

“This occurred on Monday at about 07:00 hours when Phiri was found lying on the ground near the bar after excessively drinking Kachasu,” he said.
Police visited the scene and found the body, which had no visible injuries.

Mr Liywali said the body was taken to Katete to his relatives for burial arrangements as they do not suspect any foul play.
