GOVERNMENT says it may withhold the Grade 12 results of Kamwala Secondary School pupils it is established that learners had a hand in the fire that destroyed the school bus, library and the headteachers office last Friday.

After visiting the school to see the damage for himself, Education Minister Douglas Syakalima said investigations to find the culprits of the inferno were ongoing.

Syakalima said if the former pupils are found to be guilty, they will be surcharged for damaging public property and will need to repay the money at the expense of their examination results.

Last Friday, Kamwala Secondary School awoke to a rude shock in which a fire had destroyed property, a day after Grade 12 learners had completed their final examinations.

The property was torched in the early hours of the day but although noone saw the arsonists, many blamed the incident on delinquent former pupils.
Police detained two school guards over the matter.

But the minister noted that investigations on the matter have already been commenced to establish the criminals behind the lawless behavior.

He condemned the barbaric act saying it was unfortunate that such an act happened at a time that government was spending a lot of tax payers’ money to provide for free education.
The minister said his ministry would not pay for the damages, but instead, the pupils will.

“If it is established that pupils were involved, they will not see their results. All parents and guardians will be surcharged. The Ministry will not pay for the destruction of property through this barbaric act. I have made it known that wherever learners destroy property on purpose, they will have to pay for it,” said Syakalima.

Syakalima further assured the nation that his ministry will allow law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter and culprits will be brought to book.
