Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Antony Njobvu says former Botswana President Ian Khama has no reason to apologize for calling President Hakainde Hichilema Africa’s newest dictator.

Speaking on Sun FM/TV’s Pa Ground programme, Njobvu said Khama is entitled to his opinion and could have made the remark based on recent happenings in Zambia, especially around the 2026 general elections.

“There is no need for former Botswana President Ian Khama to apologize for calling Hakainde Hichilema Africa’s newest dictator,” Njobvu said.

He said Khama, as a former Head of State and a keen observer of regional politics, has the right to comment on governance issues in neighbouring countries.

Njobvu said recent political developments in Zambia, including concerns raised about the electoral environment ahead of the 2026 polls, may have informed Khama’s statement.

“Khama is entitled to his opinion… he could have made the remark based on recent happenings in Zambia especially the 2026 general elections,” he said.

He urged Zambians to interrogate the substance of Khama’s concern instead of demanding an apology.
