Lumezi Town Council has announced the receipt of 12,000 doses of anthrax vaccines for domestic animals following three confirmed cases in wildlife in the district.
Assistant Public Relations Officer Irvin Muyumbwa said the vaccines are targeted at preventing spill-over infection from wildlife to livestock and humans.
Muyumbwa said last week government, through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, delivered 58,000 doses to Eastern Province for onward distribution to five high-risk districts, including Lumezi.
He reports that Lumezi District Department of Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services in-charge, Dr. Terence Kalota, said the 12,000 doses will cover 11,000 cattle and 1,000 goats, with priority given to areas close to Game Management Areas and National Parks.
Dr. Kalota said the vaccination programme follows three confirmed cases involving one hippo and two elephants in Lumezi district.

He said the Council will in the first week of November, 2026, embark on a vaccination exercise targeting more than 1,000 households, preceded by five days of community sensitizations across the district.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kalota has cautioned residents against physical contact with wild animal carcasses that die suddenly and against consuming game meat from unknown sources, urging them to only access meat from licensed hunting outfits.
He recalled that last month, an anthrax outbreak was confirmed in Mpika District, which borders Lumezi, where twelve people were reported infected after consuming meat from wildlife carcasses that tested positive for the disease.
The District remains on high alert to contain the spread of anthrax with close collaboration between the Departments of Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services and Health Services.
