Munali aspiring Member of Parliament Thomas Sipalo, popularly known as “Komboni President,” has sparked debate on social media after issuing a strong political statement questioning the effectiveness of independent Members of Parliament in delivering development.

In a post shared online, Sipalo argued that many constituents often judge leaders not by how well they debate in Parliament, but by the tangible projects and progress they bring back to their communities.

Sipalo stated that when elections are over, citizens usually ask one important question: “What development have you brought to us?”

He further challenged anyone to point out an independent candidate who has won an election and delivered meaningful development without having a strong working relationship with the government of the day.

“Show me one independent candidate who won, brought meaningful development, and did it without being in the government’s good books,” Sipalo wrote.

The Munali aspiring MP emphasized that leadership should go beyond making noise in Parliament or gaining popularity through criticism, but should focus on sustainable development that improves the lives of ordinary people.

According to Sipalo, being a great speaker or fierce critic of government is meaningless if a leader fails to bring tangible benefits such as infrastructure, social services, and development projects to the constituency.

“People want development, not just good debates. You can be the best speaker or the fiercest critic of Govt in Parliament, but if you bring nothing home to your constituency, you’ll be remembered as a failure,” he stated.

Sipalo also claimed that some Members of Parliament who are known as strong orators have avoided defending their seats because they allegedly failed to deliver meaningful results on the ground.

He said politics should not be about pleasing cheering crowds, but about lobbying for real projects that transform communities.

“We join politics to bring development to our people not to please cheering crowds,” Sipalo added.

In his message, Sipalo warned that the same people who celebrate politicians for criticizing government will later demand answers when development is lacking.

He noted that he would rather lose an election while lobbying for sustainable development than win and become one of the leaders remembered only for strong speeches but no achievements.

“Honestly, I’d rather lose an election and keep lobbying the government for sustainable development for my people than win and end being a statistic of good debaters who spoke very well yet brought no meaningful development,” he said.

Sipalo concluded by confirming that he has officially joined the United Party for National Development (UPND) and pledged full support for President Hakainde Hichilema, stating that his decision is not only personal but also for the benefit of the people he seeks to represent.

“I am now UPND and shall 100% rally behind President Hakainde Hichilema to help him realize his vision for Zambia’s future,” Sipalo declared.

He ended by reaffirming his commitment to development-focused leadership over political drama, signing off as Thomas Sipalo, Komboni President.

Sipalo’s statement has since attracted mixed reactions online, with some praising his realism about development politics while others argue that independent voices are important for accountability in governance.

As Zambia approaches the 2026 general elections, his remarks are expected to intensify debate around party politics, independent candidates, and the true role of Members of Parliament in delivering development.
