Democratic Union President and Presidential Candidate Ackim Antony Njobvu today reflected on the first anniversary of the passing of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, calling the situation “very sad and unfortunate”.

Njobvu noted that one year after President Lungu’s death, the former Head of State is yet to be laid to rest, with Zambia now just two months away from the 13th August general elections.

“It is painful that 12 months on, our former President still lies without a final resting place. Zambia is a nation that respects its leaders, in life and in death. This is not about politics or party. This is about dignity, culture, and respect for the office of President,” Njobvu said.

He appealed to government, the Lungu family, and all political leaders to set aside differences and agree on a burial plan that honors President Lungu’s service to the nation.

“Before Zambians go to the polls in August, let us unite as one people and give our former President the dignified burial he deserves,” Njobvu added.

Njobvu said the Democratic Union will continue to pray for the Lungu family during this period.

Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu died on 5th June 2025 in Pretoria, South Africa, where he was receiving specialized medical treatment.

That means today, 5th June 2026, marks exactly one year since his passing.

He served as Zambia’s 6th President from 2015 to 2021. As you noted earlier, his burial is still pending due to legal battles between government in his family in a South African court.
