Lusaka, Zambia — President Hakainde Hichilema has paid tribute to the late Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, Most Reverend Telesphore George Mpundu, describing him as a spiritual leader who touched countless lives through his evangelical mission.
In a statement shared after attending the funeral gathering at Child Jesus, Pope Square, President Hichilema said the late Archbishop Mpundu continued to provide guidance even during difficult moments in government.
“This morning, we gathered with many others at Child Jesus, Pope Square to bid farewell to the late Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, His Grace, Most Reverend Telesphore George Mpundu,” President Hichilema said.
The Head of State praised Archbishop Mpundu for his dedication to faith, leadership, and service to the people of Zambia, noting that his contributions will leave a lasting legacy.
“Archbishop Mpundu touched countless lives through his evangelical mission. During challenging moments, including our time in government, he continued to offer us guidance,” he added.
President Hichilema further stated that the late Catholic Church leader leaves behind an example that many people can learn from, as the country mourns his passing.
“He leaves behind a legacy and serves as an example for us all. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the President said.
Archbishop Telesphore George Mpundu was widely respected for his role in the Catholic Church and his influence on spiritual and national matters in Zambia.
