Former Minister of Tourism Hon. Rodney Sikumba has announced that he will not re-contest the position of Member of Parliament for Livingstone Central Constituency, ending his five-year parliamentary journey as the area’s elected representative.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Sikumba reflected on his time in office, recalling how the people of Livingstone gave him the opportunity to serve them when they elected him into Parliament five years ago.
“Five years ago, the people of Livingstone turned out in large numbers to entrust me with the honour of serving as their Member of Parliament; a privilege I will always hold close to my heart,” Sikumba wrote.
The former MP stated that during his tenure, he worked closely with various government departments to improve the wellbeing of residents and push forward development goals for the constituency.
He noted that while several achievements were recorded, some projects and initiatives remain ongoing.
“Over the past five years, we worked hand in hand with various government departments to advance the aspirations and wellbeing of our people. Together, we achieved many milestones, while some initiatives remain works in progress,” he said.
Sikumba expressed gratitude to the people of Livingstone for the trust and support they gave him throughout his time in office, describing their encouragement as meaningful and unforgettable.
“I extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported me throughout this journey. Your trust, encouragement, and partnership have meant everything,” he added.
In the same statement, Sikumba confirmed his full endorsement of President Hakainde Hichilema, stating that he remains committed to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).
He said his decision not to re-contest does not mean he is leaving politics, but rather that he will now focus on campaigning for the President and other UPND candidates across the country.
“As I fully endorse the candidacy of the Republican President Mr Hakainde Hichilema, I wish to inform the public of my decision not to re-contest the position of Member of Parliament for Livingstone Central Constituency,” he stated.
Sikumba further pledged unwavering loyalty to the UPND and said he is ready to support the party’s campaign efforts to ensure victory in the upcoming elections.
“My commitment to the UPND remains unwavering, and I stand ready to campaign for all party candidates to ensure victory for our great party,” Sikumba said.
He ended his message by encouraging unity and progress as Zambia moves forward.
“Together, let us continue moving Zambia forward. May God bless you all,” Sikumba concluded.
Sikumba’s announcement has since sparked discussion among residents of Livingstone and political observers, with many praising his service while others speculate on who will now contest the Livingstone Central parliamentary seat under the UPND ticket.
