The University of Sussex has paid tribute to former Zambia’s vice president Guy Scott.
University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sasha Roseneil stated that the university is deeply saddened to learn of the death of distinguished alumnus Dr Guy Lindsay Scott.
She added that his life exemplified the values of public service, intellectual curiosity and international engagement that Sussex seeks to foster in all its students.
She observed that his contributions to Zambia, his commitment to democratic leadership and his enduring connection with the university will be remembered with great admiration.
She noted that the university was delighted to welcome him back to Sussex in 2019, where he inspired students and colleagues with his wisdom, humility and warmth.
She advanced that Dr Scott studied at Sussex, completing an MA in Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence in 1983 before being awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in 1986.
She said that he went on to have a successful political career, serving as both Vice-President of Zambia from 2011 to 2014 and Acting President following the death of President Michael Sata in October 2014.
She affirmed that he led the country through a peaceful democratic transition until January 2015.
She emphasised that the university extends its sincere condolences to Dr Scott’s family, friends and colleagues, and to the people of Zambia as they mourn the loss of one of the country’s most distinguished public servants.
She added that our thoughts are with his family, friends and the people of Zambia at this difficult time.
She said that Dr Scott’s enduring connection with Sussex will be remembered with great admiration by all who knew him.
She noted that the university community mourns the loss of an exceptional alumnus who embodied the progressive values that Sussex has championed for over six decades.
