Police in Mpika have arrested a 32-year-old witch doctor and his client in connection with the alleged murder of a 63-year old man of Kanchibiya who was suspected of practising witchcraft.

Muchinga Province police commanding officer Paul Achiume said the witch doctor, Simon Simfukwe, was picked with the deceased’s son, Sydney Kaluba, who hired him to administer an unknown concoction on the father to cleanse him of witchcraft.

“The now dead man was suspected to be a wizard and that he bewitched his former wife, Catherine Songa,” he said.

However, after consuming the concoction, the victim, Godfrey Kaluba, of Songe village under Chief Kopa, died.

Chief Kopa asked his representative to report the matter to police. Sydney is said to have acted with some relatives on his mother’s side in hiring Simfukwe.

His father was given the concoction on February 26 and died last Monday around 05:00 hours after complaining of severe body pains arising from consumption of the potion.

Chief Kopa directed that the witch doctor and the son of the deceased be taken to the police.

Police found Mr Kaluba’s body in a decomposed state and advised the family to bury it but mark the grave for possible exhumation and post-mortem to establish the exact cause of his death.
