Zambia and Malawi share ideas on effective social protection implementation!

Zambia and Malawi, have pledged to work together in addressing poverty and vulnerability through effective implementation of various social protection programmes by sharing experiences and best practices.

The two countries have recognized that they share similar challenges such as droughts, unpredictable weather patterns due to climate change, and therefore making it imperative to share best practices in addressing various barriers affecting human development in both countries.

This came to light when a visiting Malawian delegation, on a social protection exchange visit, led by Principal Secretary, Gender and Community Development, Dr. Nertha Semphere Mgala, paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Permanent Secretary, Ms. Angela Kawandami.

Ms. Kawandami said Zambia has made great strides in addressing poverty and vulnerability resulting in over 1.3 million households accessing the Social Cash Transfer, due to regular, effective, timely and digitized payment systems in all the 116 districts across the country.

She said Zambia has equally made efforts to implement and provide the social protection services using a Cash Plus approach which requires adding a complementary programme to regular cash transfers to maximize effectiveness and impact on beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, Malawian Principal Secretary for Gender and Community Development, Dr. Nertha Semphere Mgala, recognized the importance of sharing experiences, successes, and challenges in the realm of social protection between the two countries, through fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange that strive towards more inclusive, sustainable, and effective social protection systems.

Dr Mgala also implored the two countries to seize this exchange visit to learn from each other, inspire positive change, and reaffirm commitment to advancing social protection agendas that leave no one behind.
