Zambia Fuel Prices: What the New Petrol and Diesel Prices Mean for Motorists

Motorists across Zambia are waking up to higher fuel prices after the Energy Regulation Board increased the pump prices of petrol and diesel effective October 1, 2026.

The price of petrol has increased to K31.46 per litre, while diesel is now selling at K33.27 per litre.

The increase follows the expiry of fuel tax relief measures that had been in place for six months.

The Energy Regulation Board said the latest adjustment was influenced by international petroleum prices, movements in the Kwacha and the reinstatement of excise duty.

The increase means motorists, transport operators and businesses are likely to closely monitor how the higher pump prices affect transportation and operating costs.

The fuel price increase has also renewed discussion around Zambia’s fuel pricing mechanism.

President Hakainde Hichilema has said monthly fuel price adjustments are no longer working well for the country and that Government is considering moving towards a two- or three-month pricing cycle.

According to the President, frequent changes create uncertainty for businesses and households and make economic planning more difficult.

Government is also considering longer-term fuel supply arrangements as part of efforts to improve price stability.

For now, however, motorists will have to adjust to the October pump prices, with petrol at K31.46 and diesel at K33.27 per litre.
