TWO children from the same family have tragically died after their mother’s boyfriend allegedly strangled them to death during a physical altercation in Nyimba District of Eastern Province.
The incident happened around midnight on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Samora 2 Compound, and was reported to Nyimba Police Station around 01:00 hours.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba tells TV Yatu’s #Sanfrossa Mberi that his officers received the murder report from 23-year-old Mary Phiri of Samora 2 Compound, who reported that her two biological children, three-year-seven-month-old Samuel Phiri and nine-month-old Innocent Tembo, had been allegedly murdered by her 26-year-old boyfriend, Winston Lungu, also of Samora 2 Compound.
According to the information provided to police, Phiri was asleep with her two children when Lungu arrived at the house in an intoxicated state and knocked on the door.
Phiri reportedly delayed opening the door because she feared that Lungu could become physical whenever he was drunk.
Lungu allegedly began breaking the window, forcing Phiri to open the door out of fear that further damage would be caused to the house, which she was taking care of.
An argument reportedly followed, which escalated into a physical fight.
Police say Lungu allegedly squeezed Phiri’s neck, prompting her to fight back by pulling his private parts before she managed to escape and seek refuge at a neighbour’s house.

However, while Phiri was away, Lungu allegedly remained inside the house with the two children.
A neighbour who responded to the situation reportedly found Lungu strangling one of the children.
Upon being seen, Lungu allegedly fled from the scene.
Mweemba says Police officers were called and rushed to the house, where they found the two children lying lifeless on the floor, with blood coming from their mouths.
Phiri was also found with injuries, including bruises on her neck and across her body, and was later taken to hospital for medical attention.
The bodies of the two children have since been deposited at Nyimba District Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations.
Lungu is currently on the run, and police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him and bring him to justice.
