The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested and charged a former driver at the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC), Deacon Munjile, over allegations that he obtained more than K200,000 by falsely promising to facilitate employment in government institutions.

Munjile, 40, of Chawama Township in Lusaka, has been charged with one count of obtaining money by false pretences, contrary to Section 309A of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

According to the ACC, the alleged offences occurred between January 1 and December 31, 2021, in Lusaka District, when Munjile allegedly obtained an accumulated amount exceeding K200,000 from Melvin Hichoonga.

The Commission said the money had been collected from several individuals on the pretext that Munjile would facilitate employment for them or their relatives in various government institutions.

The institutions allegedly mentioned included the Zambia Police Service, Zambia Air Force, Zambia National Service, Zambia Correctional Service, Office of the President Special Division, ZESCO and the Zambia Revenue Authority.

Munjile has since appeared before court and remains remanded in custody as the matter proceeds through the judicial process.

ACC Warns Public Against Paying for Government Jobs

Following the arrest, the Anti-Corruption Commission cautioned members of the public against individuals demanding money in exchange for promises of employment in government institutions.

The Commission advised job seekers to follow official recruitment procedures, stressing that government institutions do not require applicants to pay money to secure employment.

It also encouraged members of the public to report suspected acts of corruption through the ACC’s various reporting channels.

The case highlights the risks faced by job seekers who may be targeted by individuals claiming to have connections that can secure positions in public institutions.

The allegations against Munjile have not been established as a conviction, and the matter remains subject to court proceedings.
