A journalist advocating for sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene, Bangwe Naviley Chisenga, argues that the rescue of a 43-year-old woman from a well in Kitwe’s Chamboli SOS area underscores the urgent need for increased WASH financing ahead of the October 30 National Budget.
The Kitwe City Council Fire Brigade rescued Chalwe Fellisters this morning after receiving a distress call at about 06:01 hours and found her still breathing inside the well.
The team rescued her using two rescue lines and took her to Chamboli Level One for medical attention, and she was alive at the time of handover to hospital staff.

Bangwe notes that unsafe water access remains a serious risk in rural and urban communities, pointing out that WASH financing dropped from 1.80 per cent in 2021 to a projected 1.06 per cent in 2026.
He observes that the Kitwe rescue follows two crocodile-related deaths in Sioma District, Western Province, recently.
Bangwe insists that the National Budget should address unsafe water sources through the UPND manifesto’s commitments to water supply infrastructure, protected water sources and sanitation systems.
He warns that cholera will continue without addressing WASH.
Bangwe pays tribute to NGOs complementing government efforts and calls on citizens to follow manifesto commitments and demand delivery from leaders.
