Two people have died in Lundazi after being struck by lightning while two families in Siavonga have been left in the cold after their houses were destroyed by thunderbolt.
The lightning incident in Siavonga also caused the death of nine goats.

Eastern Province police commanding officer Limpo Liywalii said Mzondi Phiri, 38, and Simon Ngulube, 20, of Mwase Nthembwe village under Chief Mwase, were struck to death on Thursday noon.

“The bodies of the deceased persons were deposited to Mwase Clinic mortuary,” Mr Liywalii said.

And one of the two families left without shelter in Siavonga is that of a senior headman.

Mutuba ward councillor Felix Hang’andu and Siavonga Town Council public relations officer Gwendolyn Muchangwe confirmed the incident.

“One of the affected houses and the goats belong to a senior headman from Siamwiinga area. The affected headman was in the bush herding cattle when this happened,” he said.

Mr Hang’andu said the two families are in need of urgent help as they have been left with no shelter.

“We are saddened by what has transpired but we are glad that no human life was lost,” Ms Mwanza said.

Southern Province meteorological officer Victor Bupe said people should avoid taking shelter under trees when it is raining and urged parents to ensure that children are escorted to school.
