IN a heart-wrenching series of events, two teenagers in Mwinilunga have ended their young lives following disputes over meagre amounts of money.

The tragic incident involves 14 year old Pierry Kayuka from Muwozi village in chief Chibwika, who took his own life after a heated argument with his mother over a K4.

According to North-Western Province police commanding officer Dennis Moola, Pierry was found hanging from a tree, approximately 30 metres away from his home on Sunday night.

It is believed that the quarrel with his mother, Phaides Sikisi, 40, escalated to an extent that the distraught boy saw no way out but to end his own life.

Moola stated that no foul play was suspected in the case of Pierry’s sudden and unnatural death and the grieving relatives were advised to proceed with burying the body and marking the grave, as they saw no need for further investigation.

Sadly, this is not an isolated incident in the region.

Just last week, Zambia Daily Mail reported that a 15-year-old girl from Kabanda Township, also in Mwinilunga district, took her own life under similar circumstances.

Christabel Sokauta, desperate to recover her K3 from her 22-year-old sister, Jean Sokauta, resorted to drinking a suspected poison after her pleas went unanswered.

The tragic tale unfolded when Jean failed to return the borrowed money to her younger sister, sparking an intense wave of distress in Christabel.

When her older sister failed to give her back the money, she became upset and decided to go to the market where she brought suspected poison and took her life,” Moola is quoted by Daily Mail.

Christabel was later rushed to Mwinilunga District Hospital after she consumed the suspected poison but was was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The devastating consequences of a seemingly trivial dispute highlight the immense emotional toll such situations can have on vulnerable individuals.

The community is left in shock and mourning as they grapple with these senseless losses.

In an interview with Kalemba, Mental Health activist Duncan Nkhoma is urging families and communities to prioritise open dialogue, communication, and support networks to prevent further tragedies and provide assistance to those in distress.

“As we reflect on these heartbreaking incidents, it is a stark reminder that even seemingly small disputes can have catastrophic consequences.”

“Let us all join hands to foster an environment of empathy, understanding, and mental well-being for our youth,” said Nkhoma.
