Suspect Escape and Fatal Shooting Incident

April 4, 2024 – Kanyama Police Station, through the Plainview Police Post, unfortunately witnessed an incident involving the escape of a suspect from police custody, resulting in a fatal shooting incident.

On the night of April 2,2024, at approximately 2300 hours, a report was recorded detailing the escape of Mr. Blessings Mwape, commonly known as Tabuda, aged 27, who was in police custody facing charges including murder and aggravated robbery, among others.

The suspect was a significant figure on our most-wanted list for his involvement in various crimes targeting Rwandan and Burundi nationals.

Following his apprehension, Mr. Mwape was cooperating with officers, leading them to potential recovery sites. However, during this process, he attempted to flee, prompting officers to issue verbal warnings and subsequently resort to firing warning shots.

Despite these measures, the suspect continued his attempt to escape and was unfortunately struck by gunfire, rendering him unconscious.
Efforts were immediately made to provide medical attention, and he was swiftly transported to the University Teaching Hospital.

Tragically, upon arrival, he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
The deceased suspect was implicated in several criminal cases, including:

1. A murder case reported on March 8, 2024 involving the death of Mr. Vincent Chota Masuwa.

2. An aggravated robbery case reported on March 11, 2024 involving Mr. Henry Heritier Nuyonkuru.

3. Another aggravated robbery case reported on March 12,2024 involving Mr. Liberty Ndaisenga.
4. A case of malicious damage to property involving Ms. Brendah Phiri.

During the investigation process, items such as a machete, a knife, and a toy pistol allegedly used by the suspect in the commission of these crimes were recovered.

At the time of his escape, Mr. Mwape was leading officers to recover a pistol and stolen phones associated with his criminal activities.

The body of the deceased is currently at the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination and subsequent burial arrangements.

We express our condolences to the families affected by these incidents. The Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue to diligently pursue justice in all matters.
