Lusaka, Monday (November 13, 2023)

Centre for Climate Change Action and Advocacy (CCCAA) Zambia, working with the Zambia Research and Development Center (ZRDC), has established a Zambia Climate Youth Research Hub.

CCCAA Executive Director Silvia Nanyangwe says there exists online and physical hubs, depending on the need.

Ms Nanyangwe said her Organisation is incorporating many Zambian youths that join on board whenever there are cohorts, trainings or research symposia.

She said the hubs act as platforms for the youth to continuously engage or showcase any ideas and innovations they have, in order to move together on issues to do with Climate Change and Environmental Management.

Ms Nanyangwe said CCCAA has included universities to the Research Hub to act as a benchmark for quality in everything the Organization is doing in the Research Hub.

The CCCAA Executive Director was speaking in Kafue District highlighting what Organisations are doing on Environment and Climate Action, during a Training organised by Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) under the project “Strengthening Civil Society Voices for Climate Advocacy in Zambia”, funded by United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), covering five districts namely Lusaka, Chirundu, Luangwa, Chongwe and Rufunsa.

Meanwhile, Ms Nanyangwe said CCCAA in collaboration with the Ministry of General Education, is implementing a project called Punzila Climate Olympiads and National Awards.

“We have done a pilot in a few districts in Lusaka Province namely; Lusaka, Chongwe and Rufunsa, now targeting Luangwa. The Punzila Climate Olympiads and National Awards are there to enlighten communities about Climate Change. When we approached the Ministry of General Education, we were advised to come up with a curriculum that would fit into schools which we eventually generated and submitted to the Curriculum Development Centre (CDC). Our document was approved and we are, therefore, doing our first pilot project. The participants learn and are later assessed in phases until they reach the national awards to take place next year for the first time,” she said.

And Ms Nanyangwe said CCCAA has partnered with Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia (WECS), Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Environment Savers of Zambia on a project called Facilitating Environment and Climate Movement for Resilient Communities.

The CCCAA Executive Director said the project on Climate Adaptation is being implemented in Itezhi Tezhi District, Southern Province.

Ms Nanyangwe said the workshop by CEJ has since helped CCCAA to align it’s activities in line with NAP and the NDCs.

Meanwhile, Kafue’s Magoba Ward Councilor, Wise Mainza, said the CEJ’s workshop was impactful.

Mr. Mainza said the lessons will be shared with Kafue Town Council in order to align the Local Authority’s activities with the NAP and NDCs.
