RENOWNED clergyman Nevers Mumba has proposed pre-marital mental assessments to ascertain a couples’ mental stability.
Dr Mumba, who is also opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president, is concerned by the prevalent cases of marital violence that is sometimes leading to tragic killings.
He was speaking in Lusaka recently during the wedding reception of MMD vice president Rueben Sambo’s son, Joshua, and his wife, Precious Mfune.
“It appears to me that the marriage institution is under attack and seriously so,” he said.
Dr Mumba said the several cases of violence involving some married couples should not be taken lightly because when events in a country start repeating themselves in a more regular manner, it calls for concern.
Dr Mumba said there is need to address issues as squarely as possible and stop what appears to be a spiritual attack against matrimony.
“I am almost suggesting that maybe we should ask for mental certificates before people get married,” he said.
