The Movement for Democratic Change MDC has underscored the fact that women still remain hindered from actively taking centre stage in political discourse and leadership due to limiting factors among them financing.

MDC Acting Secretary General Ambassador Joyce Mwaka Chembe Musenge said while many women both in public and private sectors are ready to take up such leadership roles, they still face challenges which require quick intervention to be resolved.

Ambassador Musenge cites the likes of Heritage Party leader Chishala Kateka and National Democratic Congress MDC leader Saboi Imboela among many other women that have taken up the mantle to lead political parties as examples of women’s readiness to actively participate in politics.

Ambassador Musenge who is also ZCID Board Chairperson said financing is a limiting factor for women’s involvement in a political leadership which is dominated by men.

She said there is therefore need to have more mentors and role models that will encourage young girls to aspire for political leadership in the future as mentorship still remains a challenge.

Ambassador Musenge also said cultural and traditional barriers are still a hindrance for women’s involvement in political leadership and contributing towards some women having less confidence in themselves.

Ambassador Musenge has since suggested the need for women already in political leadership to do more towards encouraging other women to develop self confidence if the country is to realize meaningful participation of women in political leadership and discourse at country level.

Early this month, Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Women’s Day under the theme: “Invest in Women and Girls: Accelerate Progress.”
