Democratic Union – DU President Ackim Antony Njobvu has weighed in on the pros and cons of a one-party state, saying Zambia would need a “patriotic leader” to make it work.

Speaking on Christian Nation during the Sunday Chat programme, Njobvu was responding to public debate on whether the UPND government is sliding toward dictatorship as it pushes 74 bills through Parliament.

Njobvu said he doubted President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration could be trusted to run a one-party state.

“President Hakainde Hichilema’s government cannot be in the right position to push for a one-party state due to, among others, selective justice,” Njobvu said.

He argued that a one-party system can deliver development if led by a patriotic figure focused on national interest.

But he warned it also risks abuse of power without strong checks.

“The danger is when justice is applied selectively. Then you don’t have patriotism — you have persecution,” he said.

The UPND government has tabled 74 bills in the current sitting, sparking criticism from opposition figures who claim the pace and volume amount to railroading legislation.

Njobvu said Zambia’s history with the one-party era under UNIP should be a lesson.

“We have been there. If we go back, it must be for the right reasons and with the right leader,” he added.
