The Zambia Police Service has dismissed social media reports claiming that Patrick Mwansa, a detained suspect and son-in-law of late former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, has died while in police custody.

In a statement issued on August 21, 2026, the Zambia Police Service described the claims circulating on various social media platforms as false and misleading, assuring the public that Mwansa is alive and in good health.

The police said Mwansa’s family has also been visiting him while he remains in custody, with access being granted in accordance with established procedures.

The clarification comes after reports alleging that Mwansa had died while detained began circulating online, prompting concerns among members of the public and his family.

According to the Zambia Police Service, there is no truth to the reports of his death.

Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha urged members of the public, social media users and news bloggers to avoid sharing information that has not been verified through official channels.

The police said the circulation of unverified claims could cause unnecessary public panic, anxiety and distress to the affected family and the wider community.

The service has encouraged members of the public to rely on official communication from the Zambia Police Service for accurate information concerning individuals in police custody.

The police further reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the rights, dignity, safety and welfare of all persons in custody in accordance with the law and established procedures.

Mwansa’s name has recently attracted public attention amid developments involving investigations into alleged offences relating to national security. However, the latest police statement specifically addresses the reports concerning his alleged death in custody and confirms that he remains alive.

The Zambia Police Service has therefore called on the public to exercise restraint and verify information before sharing it, particularly where reports concern the health, safety or welfare of individuals in detention.

The clarification was issued by Chipo Kaitisha, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of the Zambia Police Service.
