The National Restoration Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) has withdrawn from the Tonse Alliance, saying the decision will allow the party to pursue its political objectives more effectively.
NRPUP Secretary General Nonde Mubanga announced the immediate withdrawal on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following what he described as extensive consultations and an assessment of the party’s operational direction and prevailing political circumstances.
Mr Mubanga said the decision was not taken lightly but was necessary to position the party in line with its vision, principles and long-term objectives.
“After careful consideration and extensive consultations, a decision has been made to withdraw from the current Tonse Alliance arrangements,” Mr Mubanga said.
He said NRPUP remained committed to unity, cooperation, national development and democratic values, but believed it could better serve its members and supporters through an alternative political approach.
Mr Mubanga stressed that the withdrawal should not be interpreted as hostility towards individuals or organisations within the alliance.
“Withdrawal should not be interpreted as animosity or opposition towards any individual or organisation within the alliance. Rather, it is a strategic decision intended to position our party in a manner that aligns with our vision, principles and long-term objectives,” he said.
The secretary general thanked the party’s former alliance partners for their cooperation and engagement during NRPUP’s participation in the alliance.
He said the party respected the relationships built during the period of association and acknowledged the contributions made by its partners.
Mr Mubanga urged NRPUP members and supporters to remain united and focused as the party begins what he described as the next phase of its political journey.
He said the party would communicate its future political direction and planned activities in due course.
The announcement marks a significant shift in NRPUP’s political strategy following its participation in the Tonse Alliance.
Mr Mubanga said the party would continue working to serve the people, promote democratic values and contribute positively to Zambia’s national development.
